Gabriele Hackworthy

THERE'S A REASON Gabriele Hackworthy is so chic: the Editorial Fashion Director of Net-A-Porter and Porter magazine time-tables her schedule with precision, much like any working mother, and then treats her fashion in the same methodical way. Based in London, the Australian creative took time out during Sydney Fashion Week, to share her thoughts on motherhood and life on the go

  2. Go Your Own Way: main picture top, as Net-A-Porter's Editorial Fashion Director and Porter magazine's Fashion Director, Gabriele is more than accomplished at the art of packing: photographed in her hotel suite in Sydney, she wears a lace and chiffon blouse by Nicolas Ghesquière for BALENCIAGA, from the Spring 2006 collection. Gabriele says, "Nicolas Ghesquière is one of my favourite designers and I have been collecting his pieces for 15 years, ever since his first collection for Balenciaga. I still wear them all today." Gold sculptural ring by ANNELISE MICHELSON; string bracelet by PETITE GRAND. Haute boheme: above, wearing a ZIMMERMANN mini dress – "It is one of my favourite Aussies labels, I live in their dresses in Summer," – together with a gold ring by ANNELISE MICHELSON and the lace-up sandals she bought in Capri whilst on holidays.
  1. YOU ARE ALWAYS JETTING OFF HERE AND THERE, HOW DO YOU EDIT YOUR STYLE TO SUIT YOUR DESTINATION? The shift in style is dictated by the city I am travelling to, like a gear change. For example in New York I tend to go for a cleaner, simple put-together look. In London I am more eclectic and a little more vintage, inspired by Portobello Road; whilst in Paris I tend to wear black and a mix of classic masculine tailoring, along with a feminine hint of provocation.

  3. CAN YOU SHARE YOUR TOP STYLING TIP WHEN ON THE GO? Take the time to try on your outfits before packing and then edit down to a capsule wardrobe. I always take an emergency LBD [Little Black Dress], you never know when you might need one. Also, I think if you never wear an item at home, then don’t think you are going to wear it while you are away.

  5. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO STRIKING A WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I try and leave work at a reasonable hour so I can do the bed-bath routine with Charlotte most nights, and I don’t work weekends except during the [Fashion Week] shows and if I have to be on set.

  2. Her favourite accessories: clockwise from left to right, CHLOÉ Faye shoulder bag in caramel; WENDY NICHOL bullet-studded leather bucket bag from Net-A-Porter;  BVLGARI Serpenti Forever Hobo bag ("for a bit of disco glamour"); THE ROW  Black Suede wrist-bag with tassel. (She says, "I love a hands-free bag for evening");  LANVIN satin obi belt ("I'll tie this around jackets, dresses and pants"); silver ethnic jewellery bought from Portobello Road market in London, and silver coin charm bracelet by CHANEL.

WHICH TREASURED PIECE FROM YOUR WARDROBE WILL YOU BE PASSING ON TO YOUR DAUGHTER, CHARLOTTE? My wedding dress – a black Prada 1920s-style chiffon and lace slip dress with Art Deco chain embroidery – I wasn’t a conventional bride. Also my Hermès Constance bag and Cartier Love bracelet.

AS A MOTHER, HOW DO YOU NURTURE YOUR DAUGHTER'S CREATIVITY? Charlotte has already told me she wants to be a multihyphenate – a writer/director/actor. I’ve enrolled her in an after-school film club and we make little home movies and music videos together. I try and drag her to as many galleries and museums as I can, and I just bought her a sewing machine for her eighth birthday. She wants to make a cheerleading outfit.

  2. IT'S ALWAYS SUCH A THRILL TO FIND IN ONE PERSON A GREAT SENSE OF STYLE IN EVERYTHING – PLEASE SHARE YOUR CURRENT INSPIRATIONS:
  3. YOUR SIGNATURE FRAGRANCE:  Le Labo Rose 31. YOUR WATCH: Chanel Premiere. YOUR BEAUTY ESSENTIAL: Sunscreen. YOUR FAVOURITE ARTIST: Bill Henson. THE MOVIES YOU COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN: There are too many to name, but my favourite directors are Terrence Malick, Lars von Trier, Wes Anderson  Jean Luc Godard, Luchino Visconti, Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, Bernardo Bertolucci and Woody Allen. YOUR MOST MEMORABLE READ: Dave Eggers' A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius because it was the last book I read before having Charlotte and I don’t think I have managed to finish reading a book since. THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS: It’s a bit of a cliché but hard work and passion are essential to making it in the fashion business. You have to live and breathe it. Striving to be the best at whatever you do and working with the best people is also key.

  2. Gypsy: "Stevie Nicks is one of my all-time favourite fashion muses and when I saw this dress with its handkerchief hem I just had to have it." Gabriele wears ETRO dress from NET-A-PORTER; lace-up sandals from Capri; an onyx and black diamond ring by POMELLATO; CHANEL coin charm bracelet; PETITE GRAND string bracelet and PINK LOU LOU necklace with Australia pendant, together with vintage gold necklaces that belonged to her mother. Pack this way: below, inside her hotel suite closet. The Fashion Director says: "I always travel with RIMOWA black suitcases and a GLOBETROTTER carry-on case." GLOBETROTTER and RIMOWA luggage, both from MrPorter.com.
  1. AND LASTLY: As an Australian expat now based in London, we wouldn't expect Gabriele to name her favourite city; however the Fashion Director's insider addresses are essential. Here, a tale of her two cities:
