- I love the creative eye of Anaïs Romand, the French costume designer, whose work includes the films Saint Laurent and Diary of a Chambermaid. Romand captures such exquisite attention to detail and her research process is seemingly intense. More recently, she worked on Planetarium, the period film starring Natalie Portman and Lily-Rose Depp, which follows the journey of two spiritualist American sisters traveling throughout Europe as mediums in the 1930s. The designer created the film's costumes with a small team of seamstresses in a Parisian atelier – her references included couture specific to the era such as Schiaparelli, Vionnet, Lanvin and Madame Grès, and she explored the Saint-Ouen and Vanves flea markets for inspiration, reports Women’s Wear Daily. Directed by Rebecca Zlotowski, the movie is the first major role for Depp, daughter of the singer-model Vanessa Paradis and actor Johnny Depp, and it must have been a kind of nurturing opportunity given she was handpicked by Portman to play her supernatural sister.
